A tourist in hyper-reality. (DRAFT TEXT 02 08 08)
Using wherever available, integral software image capturing facilities, I am recording views of environments within popular commercial computer and console games which defy expectations by focusing on peripheral detail.
Architectural structures, open spaces, landscape and esoteric and ephemeral abstractions normally pass by as small usually unnoticed elements when the players of games seek to enhance their play through using these add on features.
For example Sony's Gran Tourismo motor racing game gives the option of "photographing" cars in various ways. In action on the racing circuit or posed dramatically in a selection of photogenic locations, the player can snap pics of vehicles they have won in competion or purchased with credits gained as prize money.
My virtual tourist snapshots miss the point by avoiding the self gratification inherant in displaying ersatz success and seek out the mundane and extraneous, questioning the nature of this imaginary/real expression of achievment as well as considering ownership of creative compositional and framing decisions which arrive at a fixed image.
